Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (Group I) ESPN2 6:45 p.m.

All eyes will be on the Wagering Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita which kicks off today with the Marathon. English St. Leger winner, Mastery is the probable favorite. Proven at the distance the son of Sulamani from the Godolphin Stable may face his biggest threat from fellow shipper, Father Time who was fourth to him at Doncaster. Aidan O’Brien’s representative, Man Of Iron who won his last two on the synthetic course at Dundalk must also be given a chance. The best of the home team look to be Todd Pletcher’s Nite Light and Cloudy’s Knight who is trained by Jonathon Sheppard.
European shippers also hold a strong hand in the Juvenile Filly Turf with O’Brien’s Lillie Langtry the morning line favorite. The Daughter of Danehill Dancer won the Tattersalls Timeform Stakes at Newmarket last time after finishing third in the group one Moyglare Stud Stakes. Germany will be represented by the interesting Junia Tepzia who is unbeaten in two starts in Italy and will be the mount of Kieran Fallon. America’s best hopes lie with the Ken McPeek trained House of Grace, who won the Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland and Tapitsfly who was second in the Miss Grillo Stakes.
Blind Luck and Always A Princess who finished one two in the Oak Leaf Stakes look like the ones to beat in the Fillies Juvenile which is the one race in the series with no foreign interrest. Impressive Keeneland maiden breaker, Connie And Michael should be given consideration as well as the first two home in the Alcibiades Stakes, Negligee and She Be Wild.
Last year’s winner Forever Together, who was a fast closing third in the First Lady Stakes at Keeneland last time, is the expected favorite in the Filly and Mare Turf. The Henry Cecil trained Midday who won the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood and was second in the Epsom Oaks will present a strong presence here. Magical Fantasy has been in good form winning her last four here and should not be ignored along with the consistent Rutherienne.
Ventura looks like a good bet to defend her crown in the Filly and Mare Sprint. Very impressive in winning the Woodbine Mile last time, the Bobby Frankel trained five-year-old is fresh and loves this course and distance. Her biggest rival is Informed Decision who bested her by a nose in the Madison Stakes at Keeneland this spring and has only lost once in six tries on synthetic tracks.
Careless Jewel will try to take the field wire-to-wire in the Ladies Classic. Starting from the one hole and with little other early speed the gray filly may well pull it off but she will have to hold off the strong challenge of the Godolphin filly Music Note who was third in this last year. Cocoa Beach was second in the 2008 Ladies Classic and lines up again today as well as the first two home in the Spinster Stakes at Keeneland, Proviso and Mushka. However, the one they may all have to fear is the John Gosden trained Rainbow View who will make her first start on a synthetic surface. Rainbow View was considered a great two year old but lost her form in the spring of this year but seems to be coming to her best now. She has many similarities to the stable’s Raven’s Pass Pass who won the Classic last year.
